Biography

My name is Yelena Khristich and I was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1948.
I have harbored a love for handcrafting projects ever since I was a young child; I know how to sew, knit, embroider, and macrame.  When I moved to San Francisco in 1989, I took note of the numerous opportunities for my beloved hobbies and additionally took up beadwork, as well as participating in clubs such as Art for Elders as drawing especially is a passion of mine. Though I would not consider my works original and create free copies for loved ones, creating them within a group setting  to share with my community is what I enjoy most.  Therefore upon retiring, I wanted to apply my hobby towards a cause by volunteering with the Wood Woof Project  to knit blankets intended for newborns for the CPMC Hospital. Over the years I joined another group, knitting hats for premature infants for Kaiser Permanente Hospital right up until the pandemic lockdown halted donations.

I have since set out to teach myself a new craft during the quarantine: resin art with flowers. My love for working with and studying various blooms is a cherished pastime dating back to my youth when I helped my sister (a botanical expert) cultivate plants, learning from her practice along the way. To me, the immense variety of flowers lends itself to their fantastic beauty--and it is what inspires me to use them in these current projects.

I want to extend my gratitude towards my community and loved ones for supporting these creative hobbies and for engaging with my art, in addition to organizations such as this one that strive to feature local artists.
